The Wilderness

This was never punishment.

Something led you here. Not to abandon you. To prepare you. Moses spent forty years in the wilderness before he was ready to lead. David hid in caves before he wore a crown. Joseph walked through a pit and a prison before a palace. The wilderness is not where God lost you. It is where He is forming you.

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."

Isaiah 43:2, KJV

My Story

My wilderness had a name, and it was money.

The two years after I broke my ankle were not just physical recovery. Bills did not pause because I could not walk. There were seasons where I genuinely did not know how something was going to be covered, and I had to learn what Paul meant about a thorn in the flesh he asked God three times to remove and was told grace was sufficient. I did not always feel content in that season. I had to practice it, on purpose, the same way you practice sitting still.

HaMidbar, from the Hebrew הַמִּדְבָּר, means wilderness, but it shares its root with the word for speech, the place He talks. The wilderness was never proof that God had gone silent. It was the only room quiet enough for me to finally hear Him.

Every wilderness in Scripture has a shape.
Which one do you recognize?

The Wilderness of Wandering

Forty years before the promise. Moses and the people of Israel.

The people were not lost. They were being taught to depend on manna they could not store and a cloud they could not control. Forty years was not punishment for the wandering. It was the years it took to unlearn Egypt. If your wilderness has lasted longer than you expected, that is not a sign you are forgotten. It is a sign something in you is still being unlearned.

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart."

Deuteronomy 8:2, KJV

The Wilderness of Hiding

Caves and hunted years. David before the crown.

Before David wore a crown, he hid in caves from a king who wanted him dead. He wrote his rawest prayers in that hiding, not polished psalms, but the sound of a man being honest about fear. If you are in a season of hiding, you are in good company. The cave was never the end of David's story. It was where his prayers got real.

"I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication."

The Wilderness of Betrayal

A pit, a false accusation, a prison. Joseph before the palace.

Joseph's wilderness was not a landscape. It was people. His own brothers sold him. A woman lied about him. A friend forgot him. Every wilderness season had a human hand in it, and still, none of it was wasted. What was meant for harm became the very path to the position where he could save the ones who harmed him.

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive."

Genesis 50:20, KJV

The Wilderness of Being Seen

Cast out and alone. Hagar in the wilderness of Beersheba.

Hagar was cast out with nothing, sure she was forgotten by everyone who mattered. But God met her in the wilderness before anyone else came looking. She was the first person in Scripture to give God a name, not a king, not a prophet, a woman alone with a child, in the wilderness. She named Him the God who sees.

"Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?"
